Mplayer rpm install problems RH 8.0

hi. its my first day on linux and i'm kinda scratchy,
i've kinda figured rpms out ant realise that they are good because i dont have a clue about compiling and makefiles at the moment.

ive downloaded the xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-13.i386.rpm so now i can play my old mp3s in linux witch makes me smile, but i want to play my dvds mpegs avis too so i decided to choose mplayer because its all i could find, ive got
mplayer-0.92-1.i386.rpm
mplayer-gui-0.92-1.i386.rpm
mplayer-common-0.92-1.i386.rpm
player-tools-0.92-1.i386.rpm

the common files want the mplayer 0.92 already installed before it goes in and the mplayer 0.92 want the common files installed before it'll go in. please help

I must seem dumbass i know but have sympathy

try typing them in the same command like this :
rpm -ivh mplayer-common-0.92-1.i386.rpm mplayer-0.92-1.i386.rpm
and see if that gets around the issue ..

You could also try using apt-get, it'll make things much easier in the future installing stuff.
Check out this link.

Compiling ain't that hard, you know. Even when I was an ultra newbie I realized RPMs suck big time...
