Unhappy mplayer not starting

So I'm a complete newbe to linux, just installed Suse 10.0 this morning and am now trying to get mplayer to get to work.

So I went to www*dot*mplayerhq*dot*hu to download it.
Found in the manual (see:mplayerhq*dot*hu/DOCS/HTML/en/linux.html#rpm) that a Suse rpm was available at packman.links2linux*dot*de/?action=128
So I downloaded paketa and paketb there, and tried them both.

First try I got a depencies error message for some missing codecs, so I aborted and copied those codecs to /usr/local/lib/codecs. (They can be downloaded on the main mplayer site).
After that the depenceies error message disappeared and the installation seemed to be ok.

However, now the problem.
When I go to the menu to start the app, it just does nothing.
When I try to open a dvd wich is in the drive, it just does nothing.

What am I doing wrong or what did I forget to do? I'm simply at a total blanc on why it isn't working.
If you need some info to help me solve this, please tell me what info to post here

tnx allready for having a newbe-forum :P

note:I sillyfied the urls so I could show where I went. Can't post urls when you don't have 5 posts yet.... :-/

open a shell

type mplayer and see what the output is.

mplayer is originally a console driven player, invoked with mplayer <file> therefore a menu entry saying mplayer won't do anything as it's got no file switch, nor is it being run from a shell.

if you want a GUI for it you can checkout gmplayer and various skins, it still needs mplayer but gives it a purdy GUI, which seems more what you want.

as for the DVD, most players can play UNENCRYPTED dvds fine, such as home movies and lower budget adult movies :P

Blockbuster movies etc. are encrypted with CSS and you will need libdvdcss to get them going.

Now why didn't I think of that..... So obvious!
result:
Code:
doppynl@garfield:~> mplayer
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libmad.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Not sure yet what to do with this...

mplayer mentions on their site that you can also use a gui and I checked on the hd, there is a `default` gui there.
So I figured I got what I needed...

The DVD I tried was a single-layer dvd without region protection. Not sure if it is encrypted.
I installed the codecs from mplayer, those don't include libdvdcss?? There is no file with that name among the files in the codecs folder.

Hmmm doesn't yast have some sort of package management tool like yum?

you should be able to get mplayer and all it's associated bits and pieces from there. I should stop replying to Suse posts since i have never used it :P

I don't know what the error message means either sorry

try searching this site or google.

Also check out VNC it's a GREAT media player, similar to mplayer (infact the guys who worte it made the libdvdcss too i think.
