MPlayer HELP!!!!!!

Yet another neophyte who can't get MPlayer working....

I'm trying to compile MPlayer because I seem to be having even more trouble with the RPMs. I can install it fine, but when I try to run

#./configure --enable-gui

I get this error message:

Error: PNG support required for GUI compilation, please install libpng and libpng-dev packages.

Then, in the configure.log, I have

##########################################

============ Checking for PNG support ============

#include <png.h>
#include <string.h>
int main(void) {
printf("png.h : %s\n", PNG_LIBPNG_VER_STRING);
printf("libpng: %s\n", png_libpng_ver);
return (strcmp(PNG_LIBPNG_VER_STRING, png_libpng_ver));
}

gcc /tmp/mplayer-conf-24882-19919.c -o /tmp/mplayer-conf-15284-19919.o -lpng -lz -lm

ldd /tmp/mplayer-conf-15284-19919.o
ldd: /tmp/mplayer-conf-15284-19919.o: No such file or directory

Result is: no

I'm way lost, can anyone help? Mainly, I just want to get MPlayer installed with a gui.

I'm new to linux, running Redhat 9 with a Radeon 8500 LE video card and an Athylon 1.2ghz. Since I am new, I'd appreciate it if you could talk to me like I'm 2. That should help. Thanks in advance.

If I forgot any details, please ask.

locate libpng

What output do you get?
If it's none, it's not installed :}

Install it from your distro's CD's

And when I do get a reply? It gave me a location of libpng, but not when I tried
#locate libpng-devel

You'll have to
locate png\.h
to see if this is installed

And there's always
rpm -qa | grep "png\.."

I tried
rpm-q | grep "png/.."
but I found nothing. Could it be that part of the library is installed, but not all? Aside from that, I was trying to intall it from the src rpms disk that comes with RH9, along with ones I downloaded, but when I try to rebuild the src rpms from the command line, it just freezes up.

Apparently I'm missing something here. Anyone know of any docs or howtos I can read? i've read a bunch of posts on this site related to mplayer, but I can't seem to find anything describing my problem.

Linux hurts my head! What a cool Operating System!
