Mplayer has taken over fedora...
 

Hi Guys,

Random Info:
Distro - Fedora Core 3
GUI - KDE

Need some help with this one, I've done something very muppet-like.

Although I'm not that new to linux, I'm still learnin' about KDE (and GUI's in general). I recently found out about Mplayer, so installed it, and its awesome. However, problems came when I tried to set Mplayer to automatically play movie files.

Basically, I selected a movie file, right-clicked and selected the equivalent of Windoze "Open With" and pointed it at Mplayer.

In retrospect this was a BAD MOVE, as the filename contained spaces, and I'm willing to bet that they were not escaped properly/at all. Now, pretty much EVERY file/folder/anything I try and open, it tries to open it in Mplayer!

How do I set this back to how it was before?
Is there a back-end file I can edit?
Or, can it be done through the GUI?

Not sure what type of file you attempted to open, however, if you chose a certain app and told KDE to use that from then-on, then it could create a problem...

I could open "kcontrol" from a terminal

navigate to "Components" >> "File Associations"

and select the particular file format that is giving you trouble... from there you can chose how KDE handles the file as such....

What about using rpm to uninstall Mplayer.. would Fedora know to stop trying to use it?

Have you tried changing the file associations in KDE...? Sure you could remove Mplayer but I don't think you need to go that far yet...

Hmmm...

I've had a look in the file extensions manager, and I can't find anything obvious.
I can't even see anything that releates to Mplayer.

One of the things that does it is the "Home" icon on my desktop, that allows you to browse directories.
Which one of the 'tabs' under the "file extensions manager" would this be under?

This isn't good is it? Surely I don't need to reinstall fedora??

Anyone.. anyone at all?
