MPlayer Error Message - Error Opening/Initializing Video Out Device

Hello

I have installed Mplayer. It appears as though the install went fine. However, I can't play any video because I get an error message that says "Error Opening/Initializing The Selected Video Out (-vo) Device". I can't seem to be able to play anything with it DVD or video files. Other than that, seems like the install went okay. Video card is an ATI X800 and I have managed to get 3D working with it. Here is a copy of the message received when trying to play a DVD:

Does anyone know how to solve this issue that I am having? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what -vo are you using? have you tried changing the one you are using?

muddywaters 06-25-2006 09:55 PM

Look in the file .mplayer/gui.conf in your home directory. Check for a line
"vo_driver = "whatever""
try changing it to vo_driver = "xv"

Honestly can't tell you if this will work or why. Only know it worked for me.

Thanks for all the help. I can now play files almost perfectly. WMV files are a little corrupted still but not too bad. Movies however are another matter. When I start a movie it plays well, but I don't seem to get any on screen display to change settings like languages or scene selection. The problem is that the default language is french. I need to know how to get the on screen display to work properly. Does anyone have some suggestions as to how to do this.

are you talking about playing a dvd? or a movie file?

if it's a dvd, you have to specify what audiotrack you want to use

and easy way would be to use MPlayer's frontend... gmplayer.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It seems to be working perfectly now.

An easier alternative to this is.. ,that is, if you're a newbie to linux and just want to make things work.. try going to the preferences menu and select the 'xv' checkbox.

Try to use another driver:

Go to Preferences >> Video

Select another driver, and then try to play the file again. You might need to try several until you find the right one.

I hope this helps.

i m facing the same problem
i hv already changed video drivers one by one and test:
like
xv X11/Xv
x11 X11(XImage/Shm)
g1 X11(OpenGL)
g12 X11(OpenGL) - multiple texture version
xvidix X11(VIDIX)

some times it start:
for example if i selected:
xv or xvidix shows Error Opening/initializing the selected video_out(-vo)device
and
x11,g1,g12 started audio but not video

Where is the config file

i am new to linux
i have installed rhel 5.3 i386 on vmware workstation 6.5 which is on windows vista ultimate 64 bit.
I found out that Editing your .mplayer/gui.conf file and making sure that you have vo_driver line like this:
vo_driver = "x11" might resolve it but where the heck is this .mplayer/gui.conf file located.
can anybody tell me.
i want to watch videos in the rhel [CBT and VTC videos on RHCT and RHCE] so that i can learn linux but i am struggling from a month or two get a video play something.
no offence to linux users [i like to use it too but..] but may be this is why everybody uses windows instead of linux ...If it takes a month to get a media player working to watch movies and stuff and [may be a year if you do not have an internet connection to install a player and resolve its dependencies].It is such a shame that the linux gives u free operating systems but in order for you to use it fully you have to learn from an institute or do a course which costs a fortune if you dont believe
check this out..you have to spend USD $2,500.

why cant someone make these videos for free on youtube.
h
somebody plz help b4 i give up.
