You did not tell which version of mplayer, RHEL you have. Also I will say RHEL is quite old (unless you are running a server/website) I will recommend Fedora.

Do you have audio coming from xmms/ similar audio players? If yes, then try
$ mplayer -ao help
......
Available audio output drivers:
mpegpes DVB audio output
oss OSS/ioctl audio output
alsa ALSA-0.9.x-1.x audio output
arts aRts audio output
esd EsounD audio output
sdl SDLlib audio output
null Null audio output
pcm RAW PCM/WAVE file writer audio output

You must get a similar output. In particular "alsa" is the one that drives the sound for me.

Try a video/audio file with:
$ mplayer -ao alsa >filename<

Edit your ~/.mplayer/config and add ao=alsa

Thanks a lot,friend. but when I tried mplayer -ao alsa filename

the video remains in pause state and no audio came. Just now,my friend said,that my linux may not have audio driver. can I insmod an audio driver? or reinstalling is the only way?

Well you still did not post your version of linux nor mplayer ? Well you have to provide info for me to kind of help you.

uname -a
mplayer -v
cat /etc/issue
lsmod

In addition to this reboot your computer and try (as root)
alsaconf
to configure your sound card.
