ok never mind if anyone read this and had the same problem I did

changed my "localhost" to 127.0.0.1 in my mpd.conf

sudo /etc/init.d/mpd start --create-db

and then sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart

now my issue is playing/controling using my network. Not working on first try

Details would be really helpful. Things like the client you're using and what you're doing. You also might try starting the client from a console to see if any errors are displayed in the console.

I had to comment the line in mpd.conf, bind_to_address 127.0.0.1. Go figure. Thanks for the help I'm using MPDRIOD and its fantastic. gmpc is also for windows so my windows machines can connect to the client. So now I can see from 5 different devices what is playing add to my playlist and change songs and volume. This is so amazing and if more people knew this was possible they would do it too!

Blink. Blink. There is an Android client for MPD? Excuse me, I think I have some software installing to do. I like Ampache, but alternatives are always nice.
