xmms. Chances are that it's already installed in your system. Type xmms at a terminal and see if it's installed. Also, giving more info about what you really are looking for, like a mp3 player as window's winamp or a command line mp3 player would help. Also, telling us which Linux distro you have won't do any harm. It's important because if you have Redhat 8/9, it cannot play mp3 right away, you need to get a plugin first .
Again, as more info we have from ya, the easier to kill many problems with one shot will be

I Googled for xmms and mp3, was the second page hit.
If you run it in a terminal by typing xmms, does it give you any error messages?

no. it doesn't give any error messages at all. when i try to play an mp3 it starts for a sec, then just freezes and the only way to close it is to reboot.
if i try to open another session of xmms in run program or terminal, nothing happens, it just hangs. any other suggestions?
