Welcome both to LQ and to Linux.

The page you found offers some good solid help for setting things up and navigating around the problems with proprietary formats, so you're off to a great start.

Did you run the commands on the page as the root user? Being new to linux, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the standard user designations in code snippets that the author uses. I'm not sure if this caused a problem for you so I'll explain it here:
The author has either a dollar sign or a hash in his command snippets denoting a normal or root user respectively. e.g.
Code:
$ command_for_normal_user
and
Code:
# command_for_root_user
You can change to the root user as follows:
Code:
su -
Enter root password:
Now, in case you already knew all that:
1) Could you give us a little more info about when this error message displays, i.e. this while trying to play a mp3 through xmms or while installing the mp3 plugin?

What was the output when you ran, as per the page you gave:
Code:
# yum -y install xmms xmms-mp3 xmms-faad2 gstreamer-plugins-ugly \
	gstreamer-plugins-bad libmad libid3tag
2) dvds need the libdvdcss library to be able to decrypt them. You'll find instructions for installing it on the page you gave. Provided the packages install successfully you should then be able to play dvds using xine.

Please don't double-post -- why my fedora core 8 does not play mp3 nor video. It makes it difficult to help you solve your problem.

In your duplicate post you said:
Quote:
i started with the mp3 part
You need to start with the adding repositories step to be able to download the software the page suggests:
Code:
# rpm -ihv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

It looks like the rpm.livna.org repository hasn't been enabled. What was the output when you ran:
"rpm -ihv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm"?

It would help if you would provide the results of "yum repolist". Even if you have the package sgmeunier listed installed, it may not be enabled. yum repolist will tell us what repos yum thinks are active. Be aware that F8 hits EOL(end of life) in early Jan (7th?) and after that there will be no updates of any kind.

Hi, I got the same problem for fedora 9. Could you help:

> yum repolist
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
repo id repo name status
fedora Fedora 9 - x86_64 enabled: 12,444
livna rpm.livna.org for 9 - x86_64 enabled: 3
poptop-stable PoPToP stable repository for Fedora Core 9 (x86_64) enabled: 5
pptp-stable PPTP Client stable repository for Fedora Core 9 (x86_64 enabled: 6
updates Fedora 9 - x86_64 - Updates enabled: 14
updates-newkey Fedora 9 - x86_64 - Updates Newkey enabled: 6,880
repolist: 19,352

=== Then I ran:
> yum install xmms-mp3
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
No package xmms-mp3 available.
Nothing to do

So I just cannot find the xmms-mp3 package..

Livna is in the process of shutting down its repo in favor of rpm fusion (they have joined a group effort). You can see this as only 3 packages are listed as available from them in your repo list. Goto:

http://rpmfusion.org/

and follow the install instructions (to add the repo). xmms-mp3 is available in their F9-x64bit free section.
