Mp3's in Ubuntu Linux

I jsut installed Ubuntu Linux. I can't play mp3's on top of not having access to my modem(somebody has got to tell me where the fun is with Linux). Anyway I installed codecs and I tried to install gstreamer but I got some dependencies error. obviously I can't apt-get since I have no net access. Could someone help me plz. how do i get my mp3's t play in Ubuntu. Thanx.

The good news is that mp3 support can be added by installing the gstreamer0.8-mad app, the bad news is you can't do that without internet access. Because of potential license issues with mp3, most distros don't have support for them built in. In all cases, a quick and simple download fixes it. This page has directions for amarok, but it will also work with other media players too,

The modem can be trickier. Many modems are win software modems now, and just won't work outside windows without heavy tweaking. Search here and at google for the modem, and see if people have a way to get it working.

Peace,
JimBass

You can't play MP3s by default in Ubuntu because they are a propriety format. But if you a) search these forums or b) check the Ubuntu FAQ there will be a solution.

Didn't see the no net access. I suppose that would be a problem.
