Mozilla Firefox Fatal Error [-618]

"Couldnt open xpistub library"

trying to install to /home/username/FireFox

I'm a big fan of this browser on my windows machine and wanted to try it out on Linux as well.

This is on RedHat 8.0

I beleive u wud have downloaded a firefox..tar.gz and gunzipped this to some directory right !!
Lets say :/opt/firefox-installer
Then check the permission of /opt/firefox-installer/libxpistub.so

The permissions should have been set properly !!

KrackMonkey 01-18-2005 02:06 PM

Tried running as root with the same result.

Is there a library I missed in the install somehow?

Libu 01-18-2005 11:59 PM

Sorry about that ! I tried untarring the firefox.tar.gz, the library was not present. I guess the library gets created during install.

What is the access permission for /tmp ? This may sound silly, but maybe its not proper !!

Hey check out this thread !
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0&pagenumber=1

what the guy says is, he tried renaming xpi directory to xpistub after untarring and it worked.

I found another link for you
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/253505

Well this involves installing some extra packages before installing firefox (Xft,..), I guess these come along with RedHat 9 and i didnt face any problem !!

KrackMonkey 01-19-2005 02:18 AM

A buddy lent me a copy of the new SuSe 9.2 discs, and Im much happier with it over RedHat.

And it came preinstalled with FireFox. :D

Thanks for the help!

To close the thread, renaming the directory did, in fact, work. I tried it before reinstalling SuSe.

Libu 01-19-2005 09:50 AM

oh good that u tried ! At least now we know a workaround this problem, even if the problem is not clear : )!

Anyway happy learning with Suse :study:
