Moving Files To ThumbDrive with Knoppix

I am trying to transfer files from a corupted Windows partition, and transfer them to a thumbdrive with Knoppix 3.3. When I go to transfer the files, I get the Error message: "Could not make directory /mnt/sda1/My Documents" How can I transfer these files. As much detail as possible would be greatly apprieciated (like instead of become root, go to the command line and type what command, and tell where the command line is, sry, total n00b here) and after i can transfer the files, what distro would you reccomend to install on the notebook for begginners?

can you mount the windows partition at all? It looks like you're attempting to mount a subdirectory from the Windows partition instead of mounting the partition itself...is this true?

i can access the whole windows partition, so im pretty sure its mounted, and replying to tinksters question... im copying from /mnt/hda1/My Documents to a Lexar Media ThumbDrive at mnt/sda1

Ummm ... no.

What I want you to do is to go to a console
as root, type mount<enter> and post the output
here so we can see what we're dealing with.

By default a usb jumpdrive is set to read only. Assuming the drive is mounted (you see a green triangle on the icon) right click and change the read/write mode.

Hope this helps.
