help with movies
My linux (mandrake 7.2) seems to have a bit of trouble playing mpeg and avi as well as all other movies. I installed xanim succesfully and am using aktion as my movie player. Is the fault with linux or a configuration setting somewhere or should i try using another player? Movies take forever to load, and once they are loaded i get garbles and lines and parts of the movie, while there is absolutely no sound playing. The movies also play very slowly and choppy. Any solutions?

well, Xine has generally been adopted as the main avi / mpeg player. But i'd think that problems like that may well be at a lower level, driver / decoder based, as most players will generally use teh same libs, like avilib and such like. If your player isn't using them, then try a player that does.

a few months ago, i wouldn't have recommended xine, but it's undergone a lot of development lately. it's not the most user-friendly interface yet, but it works... even if it takes you forever to find that "select" button on the bottom left-hand side of the file list...
