mouse problem
 

Hi, being a complete linux newbie I decided to start with linspire. Everything installed fine, but when it loads up, the mouse movements are jerky. It seems to be the sympton of a lack of RAM but according to the system requirements 128MB of RAM is fine (I have a 800MHz CPU and 128MB RAM).

BTW I have installed Redhat onto this computer no problems - is there any way to check how much RAM etc linux thinks ive got? As it may not be detecting some RAM.

Any ideas?

I don't see how the system would misappropriate the installed memory. When RedHat is running fine, what problem do you have. Sure 128 megs is pretty lean, but even with kde and gnome and other heavyweight envs, it is just about enough. So it doesn't seem to be a memory issue. BTW, for the system to perform optimally with such low resources, at least one component must be from the higher end, like a higher frequency processor or higher memory capacity.

When Redhat is running, the system runs perfectly smoothly with no problems at all. Its just when I run Linespire 4.5 that the whole system is so jerky (screensavwers have an interval of about 1.5 seconds running smoothjly before it temporarily freezes), and cursor movement is much the same.

I would say it's probably a combination CPU/RAM and mostly Linsepire. Seems if Redhat is running OK then something in Linespire is robbing your cpu cycles and doing a lot of swaping memory to SWAP. I would install a realtime system monitor such as GKRelm, Trosmo, etc and monitor the CPU/SWAP usage closely. It will also show how much ram is being used.

Thanks for the info, but the system is so jerky, its almost unuseable, so installing those programs seems to be a tricky task.

Try MEPIS, Ubuntu or Xandros. Xandros is a very easy install.
