Mouse is either 3 lines or invisible
 

After installing 2 other version of Linux on my machine I finally got Mandrake 8.2 to install very easily. However, the mouse pointer is either 3 vertical lines(usually happens when I first boot the computer) or else totally invisible (happens when I logout of the GUI and then back in).
I'm a beginner at this and am wondering what to do.
