Mouse freezes and caps lock and Scroll lights on keyboard flash in Ubuntu 11.10

I have had the mouse freeze up twice in Ubuntu 11.10, I cannot do anything and must hard boot the system. It will then return to normal but will again freeze up on me. Any help would be appreciated but please remember that I am new to Linux an need step by step instructions. Thank you

Rob

Hi Rob,

Just a loose thought, because I've got (almost) the same/a similar thing here. Is the mouse/keyboard PS2 and hooked up to the computer that has a USB connection as mouse and keyboard?
If so, I guess the conversion lead could be broken...

I'll follow this thread to see if it helpe...

Welcome here, by the way!

keyboard loss (flashing lock lights) and mouse loss, ubuntu 11.10

Hey guys, I have the same problem, after a hour or so I'm dead in the water. My mouse and keyboard are usb devices.
I'm a little disappointed since I can put up with this behavior for awhile but my wife will not. I may have to return
to WXP or W7 and I really don't want to do that. I hope there is a fix for this issue soon.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks. Russ

Hello Russ,

Just a sunday-afternoon-and-january-first thought, is there a PS2 to USB converter in the game? If so, try (if possible) to replace that one.

I had the (pretty much) same behaviour...still have (lights blink, mouse stuck) it but occasionally (sometimes more than others) and for some seconds at most, then it's back to bizz...

So, just a feather floating around...

Happy new year!

Thor

keyboard memory panic

Thor,

no, there is no converter. I came across memcheck86 in panic posts elsewhere which I ran at boot (holding down the shift key
until grub showed himself.) The random bit tests failed in a number of locations but mostly near 345MB. I swapped the two 1G memory modules and the number of memory errors significantly dropped, but the location stayed the same. Maybe my mother board is or has always had an issue. Interestingly enough the start up vertical white and black bars no longer appear and so far, after 8 hours of continuous use, the mouse and keyboard are still playing along. I probably should update my memory or just but a new desktop altogether. On a side note, Windows XP Pro has never crashed on this desktop, it does makes a guy pause.

By the way, thanks for welcoming me aboard!

Russ

If the LEDs flash on the keyboard this is a sign of a kernel crash. To indicate that something like that happened it lets the LEDs flash as emergency sign. So may be the logs can help, also a complete description of your hardware and drivers installed.
