Mouse freezes

Hello,

I reported this issue a few months back, and have been taking the "grin and bear it" approach for some time, hoping that some system updates over time would correct the issue, but I have to say I'm becoming tired of the same issue

If I run anything resource hungry, such as an application in WINE, or even a native linux game, or something in the GIMP that requires some "power", my mouse freezes. The cursor will not move, and none of the buttons work.

The mouse is a wireless logitech USB mouse.

My keyboard(usb), wireless drives(usb), ipod(usb) all continue to work perfectly normal.

I have tried plugging the mouse into a different USB, no joy.

I've found the following in /var/log/message

Code:

Aug 25 09:39:50 nevada syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu3: restart.

This doesn't really give any indication to what went wrong, although you can see that I pulled everything out and tried re-connecting.

Is there anything I can do to stop this? I was hoping that if a USB device fails, you could just re-connect it and it should load straight up

I am on kubuntu 9.04. System is fully up to date as of yesterday

Please! someone must have had this problem too!

Thanks

Yes, I have that symptom, tho mine's a Dell laptop, old, using mousepad.
I have noticed it often happens minutes after the overhead warm air vent comes on!
Sometimes I can get some action back by jumping from element to element with Tab, and hitting Enter or Backspace.
Apart from that, it's the Off button.

I'm still impressed you knew to look in /var, good luck

widda 08-25-2009 05:36 AM

oh, that was a 2005 problem, I guess time has healed that one, oops:doh:

O no, 2005 was reg.member date.:doh::doh:
No wonder I'm a wee bit slow on the linux learning ,I'm a wee bit slow.

Jayla 08-25-2009 06:28 AM

lol widda, yeah I'm a "casual" linux user :P

And yes, mine does exactly the same...fan speeds up, gets noisy, mouse dies..

malekmustaq 08-25-2009 06:48 AM

Jayla,

With that information alone it is unclear whether anyone could pinpoint which is to be done. Please furnish us what returns with these commands:

Toggle your mouse On/Off, then get report from this--

root@host-# dmesg | tail

or just # dmesg <Enter> [post result here]

Also post here these reports:

root@host-# lsusb
root@host-# cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
--------------

If we can pinpoint which node your mouse is using we still need to resolve many things, possible issues could arise from these angles:

IRQ contention [this is suspect]
DBUS rule [another possibility]
udev [is another]
bluetooth [I assume wireless device broadcast uses this band]
--------------

This one is very difficult for me. But when reports are posted here I'm quite hopeful advanced users will come in to help us.

So do it.

the last command, cat /proc/bus/usb/device, I don't have such directory on kubuntu 9.04. I have /proc/bus/usb, but that is empty

Any ideas?

Also, other than var/log/message, what other logs may this issue be logged to?

Many thanks

Many apologies, my mouse is actually PS/2 not USB

Not sure if that makes the problem easier/harder to diagnose and correct

Thanks
