mouse

I'm having problems getting my mouse to work in X. I had it working before but had to reinstall the whole system due to a mistake I made. Now when I tell X that the mouse is /dev/ttyS0 the cursor doesn't move when I move the mouse. This worked before. I tried /dev/mouse but this doesn't work properly either. I can only get vertical motion. Moving the mouse vertically moves the cursor up and moving horizontally moves the cursor down. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

have you tried changing the mouse driver? typically, /dev/mouse just points to /dev/ttyS?, so changing that shouldn't matter. but having the wrong mouse driver selected can cause all sorts of weird mouse behavior.
