mounting W95 Ext'd (LBA) in FC5

Hello All,

I am trying to mount W95 Ext'd (LBA)filesystem in FC5, but I m getting following errors

[root@localhost /]# mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /mnt/ddrive/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda2,
missing codepage or other error
(aren't you trying to mount an extended partition,
instead of some logical partition inside?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

when I list the partition through fdisk -l, i get following messages.

[root@localhost /]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 30.0 GB, 30005821440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3648 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 511 4104576 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 512 1275 6136830 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda3 1276 3517 18008865 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 3518 3648 1052257+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda5 512 1275 6136798+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

I am trying to mount /dev/hda2, but I do not know which file type to give.

Please help me on this problem.

Thanks,
Suresh Bhat

You can not mount an extended partition. In a nutshell an extended partition is a container for the logical partitions i.e. anything >=5 which in your case is just hda5 (your d: drive ). Using an extended partitions allows one to create more then 4 partitions on a hard drive. So use hda5 instead of hda2. BTW did you install a NTFS module yet?

I did not install NTFS module yet, but if I mount on hda5 , is it possible to do both read and write on it ? I need to share few files from Linux and Windows. Can you please suggest on this ?

FC5 does not include ntfs support. http://www.linux-ntfs.org/content/view/120/59/
There is write support but it isn't as good as FAT32. If you can not afford the possibility to corrupt your filesystem then FAT32 is the way to go if you can afford to live with the max file size limitation.

For full write support. http://www.ntfs-3g.org/

Thanks a lot for your information.

So I understood that it is not possible to mount extended partition.

Thanks,

Correct, you can not mount an extended partition.
