mounting /dev/hdd from livecd ??

Hi everyone
My hard drive on which linux sits on, is having a problem. It can't be recognized anymore.
I'm wondering if I can mount my /dev/hdd from livecd and copy my config files??

Thanks

Assuming that the drive is working and the filesystem is intact then yes, you should be able to mount it straight up. I think Knoppix might do it automatically for you. A LiveCD is also a good environment from which to run fsck and/or badblocks from if you need to diagnose the problem with your drive. Just don't do them while the target partition is mounted!

Thank you
I download knoppix and it automatically mount my hard drive
thank god, the data is still there.
Now I just need to find a space to backup everything.
I think I better off with buying a new hard drive, instead of pushing this old hd for more.
I wonder why it suddenly failed? Is it because it's just getting too old or is there other reason that I should be aware off?

From my experience hard drives are the component in a computer most likely to fail. It could be any number of reasons beyond your control. I have noticed, however, that case temperature control problems can lead to a higher failure rates of hard drives and other components. Check and make sure your case ventilation and fans are OK.
