mounting /dev/hdd from livecd ??
Hi everyone
My hard drive on which linux sits on, is having a problem. It can't be recognized anymore. I'm wondering if I can mount my /dev/hdd from livecd and copy my config files?? Thanks |
Assuming that the drive is working and the filesystem is intact then yes, you should be able to mount it straight up. I think Knoppix might do it automatically for you. A LiveCD is also a good environment from which to run fsck and/or badblocks from if you need to diagnose the problem with your drive. Just don't do them while the target partition is mounted!

Thank you
I download knoppix and it automatically mount my hard drive thank god, the data is still there. Now I just need to find a space to backup everything. I think I better off with buying a new hard drive, instead of pushing this old hd for more. I wonder why it suddenly failed? Is it because it's just getting too old or is there other reason that I should be aware off? |
From my experience hard drives are the component in a computer most likely to fail. It could be any number of reasons beyond your control. I have noticed, however, that case temperature control problems can lead to a higher failure rates of hard drives and other components. Check and make sure your case ventilation and fans are OK.
