Mounting and unmounting flash drives - RHEL4

My problem involves trying to understand exactly what happens when you mount a usb flash drive. In RHEL4 I can mount the flash drive, and unmount it successfully, but the directory structure from the drive still seems to be available under /media/disk. Drive has been unmounted and removed.

If that is not so clear, can anyone point me to a good tutorial on mounting and using external drives?

Thanks

That is a bit strange...

Are you giving the unmount process enough time to actually complete? You need to wait anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes (depending on what data transfers were cached for that device) before it is actually unmounted from the system.

Running "sync" will force all cached transfers to complete, try unmounting it after running it and seeing if that makes a difference.

USB mounting issues

I did transfer over a gig of data to the drive before unmounting and removing. Also I seem to remember seeing unexpected activity on the flash drive as I was removing it. Could be that things were still active at the time.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to remount / unmount the device to see if I can get it clean.
