Mounting and moving files from a flash drive in ubuntu server 11.04
 

As a Windows and DOS user of several decades I am lost in Linux. I have set up Ubuntu Server 11.04 and have installed Apache as part of the install. I have configured for several domains and I now need to get the files for the domains into the proper folders on Ubuntu. The absense of drive letters has me stymied. How do I:

1: find my flash drive (or dvdrom)
2: Move (or copy) the files from either to their destinations

So far I like Linux but at this point my drives might as well be on the moon.

I had tried Google and it wasn't my friend. How it took my question of "How to copy files from a flash drive into Ubuntu Server 11.04" and gave me countless hits on how to install Ubuntu froma flash drive. That is not even close to what I asked. I will see if they redeem themselves through the link you graciously provided. I would keep my fingers crossed but that makes typing very difficult. Thanks.

Using an earlier version of Ubuntu (10.10), flash drives are usually auto-mounted int the /media directory. Usually have a Desktop icon for them. Don't know if that's changed in the most recent release. Copying will depend on what you want to copy and where you want to copy to. this usually involves permissions questions, who owns the source, who owns the destination.

My link addressed your fundamental problem of understanding a *nix type file system. With that knowledge you can go on to understand where your flash drive is located and how to move files to and from that location.

I have the same question and found the answer to be quite unsatifying. Go read the book is not an answer, especially given that we are in a forum. Forums are where people get answers. If I have to look it up, what is the point of joining a forum?

The point of a forum is not rewrite the same information over and over again. If there is a site that answers a question there is nothing wrong with posting a link to it.
In fact, on most forums, including LQ, it is expected that you do a websearch regarding your problem first and ask questions afterwards, if you don't get a sufficient answer or need clarification.

The point of a forum is to give answers. That has always been the point and it always will be. It is the attitude you demonstrate that has caused me to stay away from this board. Attitudes like that make the board useless to anyone who does not have the time for searching books. This is where you come when you have not been able to find the answer in books. It is that elitist attitude that turns people off. That has always been the rap about Linux people. Now it seems to be the rap about Linux boards. I don't get that sort of crap from Windows people.

It actually shows your attitude when you think that the time spend by others with answering your questions is of a lower value than your time spent reading the documentation. If someone has the time to open a new thread in a forum and follow the replies in that thread it can barely count as an argument not to have the time to make a Google search.

Of course the point of a forum is to give answers, but it is not the point of a forum to be a substitute for reading the documentation and it is not the point of a forum to answer questions in full length, when a simple link to the information needed will be much better (and less repetitive).

If you are turned away from Linux or a forum just because you have to do a little of the work by yourself then that is your issue. People here do a great job volunteering their free time to help people with actual problems. If your problem is that your time is to valuable for you to read the documentation then we can't help you.

I had followed the first advice and Googled. If you had paid any attention to the (my) posts you would have seen that I did as suggested. It was fruitless. I had checked literature and found no answer. This place was my last hope. It failed. It is that simple. It failed. That means YOU failed. I will give you that this place is called "Linux Questions" rather than "Linux Answers". Now we know why.
