Mounted Webcam on ubuntu 10.10 not working .

I have 64bit ubuntu 10.10 installed on dell xps 15.
My webcam is not working since i installed ubuntu.
I don't even know which kernel module to look for.
I installed cheese and it gives no output.

What kind of webcam is it? One of these commands in a terminal should help you identify it:

lspci (LiSt PCI devices) if it's PCI.

lsusb (LiSt USB devices) if it's USB.

dmesg (dmesg dumps the entire kernel list of devices--the output is quite large and may take some scrolling).

Post the identifying information here.

Also, somewhere in Ubuntu, there is normally a menu item for "Additional Hardware" or "Proprietary Drivers" or some such wording (I no longer use Ubuntu so I can't tell you where to find it); hunting for that may lead you to a solution.

Hmmm. What's the make and model of the webcam and what kernel version are you running?
