Mounted hard drive's files/folders are invisible when created

i've installed a second hard drive in the hope of having it for storage for all my computers on my network. i used the partition application in YAST so it was pretty simple. i mounted it to "/mnt/storage". than as root i created a folder called "/data" with the the proper user and group permissions so that someone other than root can save to the hard drive.

My problem is that when i create a folder whether its locally or from a remote machine it is invisible in KDE (and the names dont have a period infront) and then after i reboot the file/folder MIGHT be visible. If i delete the file/folder, it visually stays - but i can't access it anymore thank goodness...i think (ha..ha...).

Thanks for any comments/suggestions
Jay

Are you creating /mnt/storage/data or /data? Just a slight difference there.

Is there an fstab entry for it? Is it mounted? Do you have permissions for it?

sorry i'm new at this so i don't quite understand what your asking in the first bit. /data is a folder where i want to store my files and the mount point is /mnt/storage. is this what your asking for. SORRY if i'm not saying anything new and just repeating myself, i haven't been doing this long enough to "speak linux" yet.

fstab entry? --> yes its the one at the bottom: '/dev/hdb5' (see below). and when i type "df -h" in Konsole hdb5 is shown. As far as i can tell it is mounted. (and in KDE when i right click it gives the option to unmount so i'm assuming this is a good indication that it is mounted)

Permissions for it? --> the /data folder has permission as follows:
user: jay
group: users
its when i'm logged in as jay this problem occurs. i can read/write to the /data folder but i can't see anything.

i hope this is the right/useful info.
thank you for your help
Jay

/data is a directory created on the root directory.

/dev/hdb5 /mnt/storage reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 2
This line in your fstab mounts your drive under the mount point /mnt/storage.

If you stored your files in /data, then they are not on the new drive.

When you mount a partition over a mount point, any files located in the directory when the drive isn't mounted will be concealed by the filesystem you are mounting.

I bet that the /mnt/storage/data directory was created when /dev/hdb5 wasn't mounted. You may have stored the data in the unmounted /mnt/storage/data directory, which means it is actually located in a subdirectory on the root (/) partition, /dev/hda2, instead of on the /dev/hdb5 drive.

I graduated with a EEE degree in 1982, so we should be understanding each other.
