Mount hdd ?

Hello there ,

Got my old hdd broken , my hoster changed it for a new one and let the old one connected as (/dev/sdb).

I tried to mount it to restore my data with some problems then i have rebooted my server (under ssh).

Once server up i don't see anymore sdb sdb1 sdb2 sdb3 sdb4 sdb5 sdb6

Where is the problem ?

Regards !

The description isn't overly clear, but ...

What does
Code:

fdisk -l
say about ANY present HDDs, is there anything in the output of 'dmesg'
pertaining to a faulty HDD?

Cheers,
Tink

chachi95 09-01-2010 07:59 PM

This is the result

Code:

# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0001d11f

Device Boot      Start        End      Blocks  Id  System
/dev/sda1              1        486    3903763+  82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2  *        487      60801  484480237+  83  Linux

dmesg what this?

Tinkster 09-01-2010 08:05 PM

dmesg is a tool that gives you a view into the kernels
"ring buffer"; hardware and other events will be shown ... most
of this you can also find in the /var/log/{messages,system,debug,...}
files. 'dmesg' just makes it easier (less typing) - however, as
it's a ring-buffer older events may not be visible after a while.

And the fdisk output suggests that there's only one HDD known
to the system - so looking at dmesg may really be a good idea.

Cheers,
Tink

Hummm ... there seems to be an issue with one channel, and
the machine only knows about ONE HDD (WDC WD5000AAKS-00V1A0), Western
Digital of some sort

Cheers,

chachi95 09-01-2010 09:13 PM

Oh realy ?

What can i do to identify the old hdd ?

Tinkster 09-01-2010 09:29 PM

Nothing, I'm afraid ... if the kernel can't see it, that means
the controller can't.

Get them to try it in a different machine, send it to a
shop that specialises in recovering data from dead HDDs
... nothing you or I will be able to fix remotely.

Cheers,
Tink
