Mount FAT32 PArtition bigger than 32GB
 

Hi,

this is my second day on linux so i'm still kind of stupid. :)

I'm using Mandrake 10 and XP on one machine and I want to mount a fresh formatted 72 GB FAT32 Partition under Linux. I'm using the DiskDrake Utility for this. I tried to format the Partition with fdisk from a boot disk and also with Partition Magic under Windows XP as FAT32, but in every case DiskDrake shows me the Partition as NTFS. I'm guessing that Windows adds some additional information which makes DiskDrake think that the partition is NTFS. Windows shows me the partition correctly as FAT32.

So I tried to delete the partition and created a FAT32 with DiskDrake. It worked fine, but under Windows my partition table seems to be fucked up, since the DiskManagement Tool shows me this partition twice and Partition Magic says that 2 partitions are overlapping.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Do you have anything important on that partition?

In partition magic, when it says the partition is overlapping, does it offer to fix it? If it does AND if you don't have anything valuable saved there, try to let pm fix the overlapping. Pm is quite reliable. Usually it knows what it's talking about.

Then reboot and check what Mdk thinks about the new setup. Post again if it fails.

How did you create a FAT partition that big? In windows the biggest I could get was 32768 MB. Maybe there is some limit to that.

Yes, PM did offer to fix it, but it actually didn't. It just kept saying that partitions are overlapping and offered to fix it again and again.

But I found out that Linux recognized any FAT32 partitions correctly if they are located before 128 GB. I don't know the reason but i just moved my FAT32 Partition and now everything works.

Windows cannot format a FAT32 bigger than 32GB but Partition Magic can.
