Most Stupid Question Ever... Cant find answer...

Because I am not really good at English. I have opensuse 10.2 and I cannot find the place where, when I put my dvd in, is supposed to be... Like D: under windows you understand? This is stupid I know because my usb external drive is under /media but the DVD drive is not under /dev or /mnt.... here is my fstab

Code:

/dev/sda7            /                    ext3      acl,user_xattr        1 1
/dev/sda8            /home                ext3      acl,user_xattr        1 2
/dev/sda1            /windows/C          ntfs      ro,users,gid=users,umask=00
02,nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/sda3            /windows/D          vfat      users,gid=users,umask=0002,
utf8=true 0 0
/dev/sda5            /windows/E          vfat      users,gid=users,umask=0002,
utf8=true 0 0
/dev/sda6            swap                swap      defaults              0 0
proc                /proc                proc      defaults              0 0
sysfs                /sys                sysfs      noauto                0 0
debugfs              /sys/kernel/debug    debugfs    noauto                0 0
usbfs                /proc/bus/usb        usbfs      noauto                0 0
devpts              /dev/pts            devpts    mode=0620,gid=5      0 0
/etc/fstab lines 1-11/11 (END)

Sorry to bother with that!

PatrickNew 01-04-2007 08:28 PM

well, it's not listed in fstab, but most modern distros put it in /media/dvd or /media/something.

/media:

EDIT: When I right click the DVD under my computer, it tells me that the location is

/media (system)
mountpoint: /media/ ???????

bigrigdriver 01-04-2007 09:09 PM

Your /dev lists these cd/dvd devices:

cdrom
cdrecorder
dvd

So, add these lines to your fstab (taken from my SusSE 9.3 fstab):

/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,rw,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/dvd /media/dvd subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0

Then create the mount points in /media

mkdir cdrom
mkdir cdrecorder
mkdir dvd

Then reboot to see if that works.

OpenSuse 10.2 doesnt need you to add a complex line into FSTAB

Place a DVD in your DVD drive

Open Your Computer
KDE has an Icon called
Storage Media

system:/media

you will see your DVD disc there
it will be the same name as the disk

it will be quietly loaded/mounted for you in /media/[name of Disc]

No, this is what Im talking about, I need the path of it, because I want to point a program to it. And it is not /media/[name of Disc] ...

muha 01-05-2007 05:22 PM

On my suse 10.0:
Code:

mount |grep dvd
/dev/hdd on /media/dvdrecorder type subfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,fs=cdfss,procuid,iocharset=utf8)

hth

Yeah but 10.2 is diffrent. It handles things at your place, which sucks... Anyways thanks everyone for trying... Guess it wasnt that stupid after all ;)

tredegar 01-06-2007 11:46 AM

One last try please:
Put the DVD in. Navigate to /dev/dvd. Are your files there?

bottled leaf 01-06-2007 12:57 PM

um from the looks of your fstab
are you having trouble accessing your window drives?

PatrickNew 01-06-2007 02:05 PM

Try searching the Suse documentation. I used to use Suse 10.1, and as I recall it did awfully weird things to mountpoints.

colucix 01-06-2007 02:22 PM

You can try to open the DVD by Konqueror then right-click on any folder (if any) and check Properties: look at "Mounted on:" to retrieve the path to the DVD.

Nope

Absolutely not... Why would I have a problem doing so?

Been there done that... tells me it under /media/ (system) ... WTF is that?

Indeed!

I dont really need that anymore, but its just by curiosity... If I ever need to boot in INIT3 forget it, I wont be able to browse my DVD drive.... pretty clever!

PatrickNew 01-06-2007 04:32 PM

In 10.1, the media:// protocol always seemed to me as a way of making linux mountpoints into Windows drive letters. Perhaps in 10.2 Suse took this a step further, and tried to make the actual underlying mountpoints inaccessible, so that you could always think of them like a drive letter. Maybe check for hidden folder names?

lonecrow 01-06-2007 06:52 PM

Your guess is as good as mine! But it really is a wrong way of doing this coming from suse... I mean, they probably want to ease the tasks for those "windowers" wanting to give linux a try, but it just plain sucks. If they cant find a drive, then dont use linux at all... Anyways sorry for my rant :|
