most non technical stupid question

Well figured I would introduce myself to the forum. I guess Im pretty much a microsoft person. I've used linux some redhat 9 (having trouble with the most recent kernal upgrade). I try to do a rpm -bb on a extracted file (from what I understand this is the build binary parameter). I read somewhere that rpm -bb was replaced with rpmbuild. I've tried both of these and it fails to find the command. I've also tried the make command from what I think is a script file. I am trying to install a nic card.

And for the stupid question does the saying "less is more, more is less" associated directly with linux in anyway?

It all depends on what distro you are using!

what is the file name of your kernel, perhaps it's already a binary (.rpm) and all you have to do is rpm -i filename.rpm .

Oh, welcome to the forum! And Welcome to Linux!

If coming from a M$ost background, you presumably already know about "more". From a terminal session try "man less" (no quotes - q to quit), and be enlightened ...:p

Why did you choose to use an old and unsupported Linux distribution? There have been 5 major releases of RedHat (now called Fedora) since version 9 was released. Upgrade to something newer, and it'll work better for you.
