Latest finding,
mageia 3 beta 1,
installed thru usb 2,
but boot with usb 3.

It works, fast.

The question still remains. Do you correctly see the usb drive as a choice in bios? I didn't suggest any settings.

yes,
booting sequence can be set,
it is USB storage, does not specify usb 2 or 3.

The latest Ubuntu Ultimate 3.5 can boot from USB 3 HDD.
