More uninstalling and updating

1. How do I update a program that I'd installed using a "tar.gz" file?
Must I know the name of the "tar.gz"(the old name) that is still installed? If I expand the
new version and it is installed over the old one? (Remember that the name of the new
"tar.gz" is probably different of the old)

2. How do I totally remove a program that I'd installed using a "tar.gz"? Must I know the
name of the "tar.gz" used to install it? Is there a way of discover the mentioned name?

I'm wanting to update from Firefox 1.0.3 to Firefox 1.0.4...

Did you install from source or precompiled binary? The binary just dumps everything in one directoy. delete the directory. install new version make symlink in /usr/bin.
