Monitor sleeps with ATI drivers

I'm fed up with this mess. I've been trying to configure a decent workstation for my mom, but there's always another something hindering my progress.

This time it's the fglrx (8.14.13) driver. I've recompiled things in and out of the kernel, reconfigured Xorg, reinstalled and upgraded Xorg, installed an entirely new kernel (2.6.9), and tweaked just about everything that I know. Nothing works.

I've gotten it as far as starting Xorg. When I start Xorg, my monitor goes into sleep mode. The only way to wake it is to kill the instance or login remotely and reboot the machine. The logs show no errors or any indication of a problem.

Slackware 10.1, kernel 2.4.26/2.6.9
ATI Radeon 9600XT
Xorg 6.8.2
fglrx 8.14.13

Dammit. I've posted three topics and haven't received a single reply.
