Monitor resolution was correct but not anymore ...

Hi,

About three weeks ago I bought a new PC and installed Debian Squeeze. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2494hs monitor connected to it. Until about an hour ago the monitor resolution was 1920x1080 and there were no problems. Anytime I clicked on system -> preferences -> monitors, the monitor preferences displayed the monitor name (Samsung whatever) as well as the resolution (1920x1080).

An hour ago I did my normal daily upgrade via synaptic (synaptic -> mark all upgrades -> apply). When the upgrade were finished, the system indicated that a restart was required, so I restarted.

After the reboot, my monitor's resolution is set at 1152x864. System -> preferences -> monitors shows the monitor name as unknown and the max resolution available is 1360x768. Xrandr shows the max available resolution as 1360x1360, which is obviously wrong.

According to discover I have an ATI graphics card (but I'm not sure that I have this right - there's a reason why this is posted on the newbie forum...). I've also run ddcprobebut that outputs about 15 lines and then stops with edidfail.

I do not have an xorg.conf on my system or, if I do have one, it is not in /etc/X11

Any help in solving this problem will be most welcome and highly appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

Please use [pre][/pre] tags around things like log files.

Well, the log file also shows that it's not picking up the EDID from your monitor. So either there's a loose/bad cable, a buggy/non-existant EDID (seems unlikely given that it worked before), or a buggy driver (seems unlikely if ddcprobebut is failing, too).

In any case, you could try creating an xorg.conf file and forcing a resolution. Know how to do that?

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the "[pre]" tip. I tried [code]...

I don't know how to create an xorg.conf. I've tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but nothing happens. What should I do?

Thanks for your help thus far. Much appreciated.

Cheers
Joe

Bah... Actually I meant code tags... I guess linuxquestions has issues with that.

Anyway... Run 'Xorg -configure' and copy the file that's generated to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Then pastebin that file. Oh, this monitor is hooked up to the VGA port on the GPU, correct?

Afaik the monitor is hooked up to the VGA port. The PC, although newly bought, is pretty much a budget model and the cable linking the box and monitor is one of those triangle-without-a-tip jobbies. I'm sure it has a technical name...

For what it's worth, xrandr gives this output:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 1360
VGA-0 connected 1360x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1360x768 59.8*
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
DVI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
About the Xorg -configure command: I assume that kdm has to be stopped before I run it? I've tried going ctl-alt-f1 and executing "init 3" but that didn't do anything.

If I try to run Xorg -configure from a terminal window, it gives this output:
Code:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
	and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
	 at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.
Thanks
Joe

Heh. Try stopping your display manager with '/etc/init.d/gdm stop' (as root) and then run 'Xorg -configure'.

Dang, no luck ... I get

Any other ideas?

Well, theoretically, we can probably just get away with creating an xorg.conf file that contains only the monitor section for VGA-0. Try using this as /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "VGA-0"
        Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
        Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080_60.00"
EndSection
That modeline was generated with cvt ('cvt 1920 1080 60'). You can generated whatever modeline you want to use.

Feeling kinda stupid right now ...

There's a crucial piece of information that I did not share - because I've only just realised that it is crucial. I had two PCs connected to the monitor and used a KVM switch to toggle between the two. It seems that the KVM switch was the problem. I removed it and, lo, the resolution is once again picture perfect and crystal clear.

Adam, thanks for your help and patience. It is highly appreciated. Sorry that I turned out to be wasting your time.

Cheers
Joe
