monitor imap, pop3, mysql, snmp

hello,

how do i monitor the above-mentioned services in my localhost and windows server? currently i'm using ubuntu 9.10. i know there are plugins, but how exactly should i use it? currently for my localhost, i had 'connection refused' for POP3 and IMAP, (Return code of 126 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing) for mysql and (Return code of 127 is out of bounds - plugin may be missing) for SNMP

for nagios. i'm using nagios to monitor the services.

The message for pop3 and imap mean that your nagios host cannot get a
network connection to the other host. Make sure that the services are
running, configured properly and not being blocked by a firewall.

For mysql and snmp it sounds like you're missing the required plugins.
Check to make sure you have installed all the available plugins for
nagios.

HP has a good section about troubleshooting nagios plugins at this address:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-7402/ch20s02.html

may i ask some silly questions? >.< sorry i'm quite dumb :X

hmm,

for pop3 and imap, how to make sure the services for these 2 are running on other windows servers? for ftp, i do know i have to check the check-box for ftp services in control panel. but i didn't see any pop3, imap in control panel. :X

i saw this download link:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nagiosplug/files/

is that download link for all nagios plugins? including those like mysql, pop3 etc.

thank you.

Typically pop3 and imap will not be running on Windows servers unless you
install Exchange or some other mail server program. If you haven't installed
anything, these services will not be running.

How did you install nagios? From a download at sourceforge or through the
Ubuntu package manager? Whichever one you used to do the inital installation
is the one I would use for extra plugins.

Oh, so basically after i have installed Exchange or any other mail server program, pop3 and imap would be running? i do not have to do any configurations for Exchange etc?

i downloaded nagios core from here: http://www.nagios.org/download/core/thanks/

and the plugins i also downloaded it from here: http://www.nagios.org/download/plugins/

both from nagios website

but in the first place i've already download the nagios plugins, so all plugins for monitoring of different services would have been downloaded too, isn't it. (:

Yes, you would need to configure any mail server program. Make sure that
you know what you're doing before allowing the mail server to access the
Internet!

Since you have installed the plugins from the nagios website, you should
be all set. From here you'll need to troubleshoot why you're getting the
errors. Try following the suggestions on this page:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-7402/ch20s02.html

Hi,

sorry about my earlier post. that was stupid of me to enter the command lol. :X sorry.

okay using the ls *_http i'm able to check whether a particular exists.

i tried to search for mysql plugin by using:

Code:
ls *_mysql
it gave me:

Code:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'xanios'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
so i guess, i do not have that plugin(mysql) installed.

i tried to search for check_https plugin and i got

Code:
ls: cannot access *_https: No such file or directory
somehow i feel that for check_mysql, that error which i have got doesn't mean the plugin is not installed?
