Modules are not loaded into the kernel, after upgrade!

I've compiled from source kernel 2.6.19.1, it boots up (takes much more time since it looks for modules which it cannot load) and I can run X

but the problem is, modules are not being able to be loaded! I'm currently using XP to post this message :

here are the exact steps I've done and got to this sitsuation :
Code:
mv /home/user/Desktop/kernel-2.6.19.1.tar.gz /usr/src
cd /usr/src
tar xzvf kernel-2.6.19.1 && cd kernel-2.6.19.1
make mrproper
make xconfig done a new configuration...
make
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
cp System.map /boot/System.new.map
cd /boot
mv System.map .System.map.old && ln -s System.map System.new.map
Configured /etc/lilo.conf to point on the image of /boot/bzImage
/sbin/lilo
shutdown -r now
after restarting it loaded after lots of time
when it needed to load a module like Ethernet card this is what happened :
Code:
modprobe 8139too
FATAL: Module 8139too not found
same for amd64-agp or any other module.

ask me any question you think I should verify in-order to make this work, including silly stuff like "have you done x and y?"

Thanks!

EDIT : I did edited the extra name in kernel Makefile in the 4 or 5th line to something like "Zukis kernel which hates panics"... pretty sure it's not related but I'm mentionning that.

First you dont need to do all these steps for compile a 2.6.x kernel

Code:
make mrproper #if you want to remove your old config file, or aleast back it up
make
make modules_install
make install #will do the copying and update lilo for you
lilo
Also list your .config file (the section that applies) and maybe a snippet of your dmesg. This will tell me what is happening.

Thanks,

djgerbavor3

are you sure you configured them as modules???

because I bet you didn't do that. One thing, everytime you do a make mrproper it overwrites your .config file. What i do is when i get a configuration i like, i copy it to my home directory.
Code:
cp -v /path/to/kernel/source/.config ~/
every time I want to recompile my kernel, I do a make mrproper, and then after that command finishes I do:
Code:
cp -v ~/.config /path/to/kernel/source/

However past your .config file so I can see it.

Also, what does uname -r tell you?

thanks,

djgerbavor3

that's why you should read the README file. (i'm going out on a limb here, but I'm going to say that's why it's named README)

To me you got the basic .config file and it looks like you compile your NIC as built-in which is ok if you do not mind adding a few options to the boot loader. Personally, I set NIC as modules because it provides me more freedom and a way to disconnect the NIC. Also I use make menuconfig instead of make xconfig and I quadruple check the options before running make && make modules_install.

All additional modules like nVidia, fglrx, and others will have to be re-compiled for the new kernel. Before I reboot, I usually change video driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to vesa or svga for GUI to work upon boot up.

It is best to read the README or some documentation before compiling programs.

I would recomend that he does what it says in the README file:

make O=/home/name/whatever_directory menuconfig (or xconfig, etc...)
make O=/home/name/whatever_directory
sudo make modules_install install (or use su if sudo isn't set up)

I have done that hundreds of times (no, that is not an exageration, I just get paid to do it), and it has always worked. I would always recomend that you follow instructions, instead of doing whatever looks to be the best way. I learned the hard way at first, and then learned to appreciate the wisdom that is the README.
