Module ip_tables missing after 100% disk used.

Dear community! First of all I would like to congratulate you all on your knowledgable and friendly forum. I've ended up here many times during the last few months as I were in the process of setting up my server.

Now to my problem: When trying to restore my iptable ruleset I get:

Code:
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.3.6: Can't initialize itpables table ´filter´: iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
Up to this point my server was running iptables out-of-the-box just fine. Never reporting any errors.

I suspect that some system files or settings were damaged after I accidently saved a huge file to the wrong folder causing the system partition to be completely filled up, temporarily.

According to Google I should recompile my kernel with certain options enabled but since everything was running fine before my mistake I figured I should ask here before doing anything drastic.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Kernel version: 2.6.18-6-amd64
Dist: Debian 4.0

Edit: Perhaps my suspicion above is silly. I guess a more likely explanation would be that I, at some point ran a dist-upgrade without rebooting my system - until earlier today. Still that does not really make it clear to me what I am supposed to do to fix this issue.

As before, any advice or hints in the right direction would make me happy.

Thank you.

Your error message says it...."do you need to insmod"?? Try typing in "insmod iptables" or "modprobe iptables"

Thank you. I gave it a shot but to no avail unfortunately.

However, apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-2.6.18-6-amd64 and a system reboot solved my problem.

Thank you.
