Modifying Disk Schedulers and Optimization Codes

I am fairly new to linux, I have a windows 7 laptop, I am in an OS class this semester and needs help. My C/C++ is good.

1. How do I get a linux kernel source to work with on my windows system?
2. How do I modify the kernel
3. Senior students already hinted, we cannot avoid disk schedulers, and rotational optimization issues in the course, being the professor's favourites, where are CFQ, noop, deadline, and anticipatory schedulers codes, SCAN,C_SCAN etc codes located in linux source and how do I edit them.
