Do you know what kind of modem you have?

Is it an internal PCI modem?
Is it an external USB modem?
Is it an external Serial modem?
Is it a DSL modem?

There are a multitude of ways to get a modem to work in Linux, knowing something about it is a starting place.

Good, then just plug it in and it should work. Go to the network settings and make sure it's using DHCP if you have problems.

The short answer is no. The ports used are standard, and IP addresses are automatically determined. Firefox will use what's available.

Two commands to try to diagnose it:

Code:

ifconfig
ping google.com
