Modem Problem!
 

Specs:
US Robotics PCI 5636 [says linux supported for kernel 2.4+]
Redhat Linux 9.0
Confused Newbie


Question:
Everytime i restart it has a generic modem. It is on /dev/ttyl1. All my information is in that is necessary to log on. I am just converting to Redhat Linux 9.0 so im not so sure where to get support. I tried newsgroups, irc, etc. but nobody really feels like helping. If anyone can guide me through this please help me out, thanks so much!

I understand your frustration at no replies, but double posting is generally frowned upon. As to your post, I personally have never heard of /dev/ttyl1 (if that's a lower case L in there) perhaps its a red hat thing, google it and see. Anyway, if the modem is plugged in the serial port 1 you want /dev/ttyS0 as the port. Anyway, something for you to try.

sorry yeah its bugging me cause i really wanted to start my experience with linux, b ut without the internet its pretty tough.
It is a interal modem and says it was linux supported which is weird.

I tried every possible combination and if it does go active, the internet doesent work but it just says active. All the kppp settings are fine. Thanks for the reply tho

ok, sorry for being retarded, you said at the beginning it was PCI. Ok, if you post up the output from lspci and any relevant lines from dmesg (you could try 'dmesg | grep obotics' to get some lines about the modem) you do this by typing the commands into the terminal, or command line, or whatever rh calls it. Also, if you start kppp from the command line you might get some useful error messages appearing. Post them too! ;)
Have a look if there's any relevent documentation installed on your box already (in /usr/doc or /usr/local/doc or something similar.) If not have a look at ldp.org. I know nothing about internal modems on linux i'm afraid, but if you post this stuff up someone might be able to help.

i wasnt using kppp before instead i was just using the internet configuration *duh* i reposted this message[sorta] in hardware and got a good reply that ALMOST worked except it says modem busy. If someone reads it you may be able to help me out!

find a better driver. Some modems ass the netdragon have one driver that came with the cd and also you can find many versions of the same driver as you can.. so search for another driver and see what happens.

In kppp settings under Device try choosing different Modem devices
/dev/modem
/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3

yeah thats the first thing i did try once i realized what kppp is. I tried EVERY combination of settings that SHOWS, not the other ones in the /dev/ folder

I would say ask a moderator to move this thread to the Red Hat forum (I say as a mod because posting to multiple groups is a no-no). There are official Red Hat reps in their who may be able to help.

this are the responses i get when trying to connect from kppp

dev/modem - busy
dev/S0 - no response
dev/S1 - busy
dev/S2 - busy
dev/S3 - busy
dev/ttyl-ttyl3 [all of them] - unable to open

im either thinking S0 or modem is the right one but i dont know what i configured wrong, or even if i configured anything!

any suggestions?
