Modem issues fedora 6

I have installed Fedora 6 dual booting with XP on my machine. I am a complete NEWBIE as far as Linux is concerned.
Could somebody out there in Linux world pleeeease explain step by step in BASIC language how to configure my Dynalink external modem to actually work!, I have it connected to the 9 pin modem/serial port and I have supposedly configured it in "networking", leaving it at default settings as far as ports etc. goes. The result being ERROR 2 or ERROR 7 if I try another port off the list when I try to activate it.
The modem is not being detected by Fedora, it is a few years old but still works fine as far as XP is concerned.
I have checked every thread I could find on this topic and Im still scratching my head, what is error 2 or 7?? help files are no help. If I need to type in commands to change the port could you please tell me where?? (I did say newbie) all I see is a desktop!! is it the command prompt?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Which /dev are you using for the serial port connection?

it says Modem but I tried them all from the drop down list -same result. Im new to all this /dev stuff, being spoilt by Bill Gates so I appologise if I didn't answer the question!! Thanks

If the comm port is set to default standard IRQ then this list should help to determine which port is which related to the /dev which is referred to as device block. A /dev is used to interface between a device and the kernel.
