I did a search at Mandrake's Hardware compatibility test and your modem did not show up. I then went to http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html for a "winmodem" compatibility search. On there, I found a link to http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/ for the unofficial PCTel modem for linux site. From there I found the PCTel Linux Compatibility Database at http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/display.php and found that number 49 shows that your modem is not compatibile with Linux:

49 PCTel HSP56 MR-8170 i845 Not Working

Sorry to tell you this, but you'll probably need a different modem.

Juby, do you have a more specific area of that website that 10119315 can look at. Firstly, it comes up in a language I've never been able to read, secondly, the English URL is http://www.technion.ac.il/english/index.html and thirdly, where is the download portion of it? I tried a search and it opens up a google search engine. The site looks to be the website of a school.

10119315, it seems as though PCTel forgot to write a Linux compatible driver for this particular modem. It sucks to say that, but it happens sometimes. Did you laptop come with a NIC? If so, and you have cable or DSL internet, we might could get you going with that. If not, you might have to get another modem installed, or fine a good external one.

Thanks for your reply. I do have a NIC card and it is detected by linux but unfortunatly i am out of reach of both digital services. So it is good old 56k dial up for me lol.

Can you suggest any good external usb modems as this is the only port i have available.

Thanks for your help guys.

I've checked all over the place for a list of USB 56K modems and can't find one. However, The Linux Documentation Project has some information on what will work:

Quote:

Some USB modems work with Linux and some don't. Linux has support for modems that conform to the USB Communication Device Class Abstract Control Model (= USB CDC ACM).
More info can be found at that link. Your best bet is to find out if anyone here has a USB 56K modem working with Linux and then try to get the same one. You could also do a search on certain brands like Connexant (sp?) or something like that and go through their documentation to see if it's supported in Linux. Hopefully the modem manufacturer will have good documentation on it. Good luck.:)
