modem driver

I use an E-tech faxmodem 56k (pci56rwm) with SuSE 7.1 but it doesn't work. Do I need drivers? Are general drivers o.k.? Or do I need a new modem? I send e-mails to SuSE and E-tech but no respond so far. Can somebody help a NEWBIE.

Thanks Draaier :newbie:

It could be a winmodem. Do you know for sure if it is or is it a hardware modem? Doesn't sound like it. Try going to www.linmodems.org for more help if your not sure. If it is a winmodem... your going to most likely have a hard time getting it to work.

what kind of file is it in.. ? like is it a driver type, or is it coming in a zipped format..?

usually there should be installation directions from the site or with the file to read to see how to install it.

let us know of any problems or there is no instructions.

I'm sure it's a hardware modem because when I bought it I ask for it. I didn't want a winmodem that slows the computer.
I'm now looking at the windowsdriver(it's an .INF file) and try to understand it. I found some command lines(AZF&D2...) for the initialisation. I put the command line in linux and I get a new message 'modem is busy'. I also made a change in the bios settings, plug and play option disabled. It seems that SuSE can autodetect the modem with YaST but I didn't tried it yet. I will keep on trying.:study:

It is in zip format. I didnt see any installation instructions on linmodems.org so now what? I am trying to not have to buy a new modem lol this will be my last option before i buy a new one.
have a great day
and thanx in advance again :)

If you know the chipset of the modem it would be easier to get help too. As the linmodem website says, the Model and Model number usually don't help. If you look at the modem and one of the chips says AGERE or LUCENT, odds are it's a winmodem. Don't worry though. Lucent winmodems are supported and work great once you get the drivers installed, which isn't hard if you download the correct RPM for your distro and kernel version. I have a Zoom 56k Internal Faxmodem that is a winmodem and I use it to connect to the internet with no probelms in Red Hat. All it comes down to is finding the drivers that match up with your distro and kernel. You can also get the source if you cannot find a match, which you can easily configure by reading the README files included in the .tar.gz archive. But if you don't have a Lucent/Agere chipset on your modem and you get the error: Sorry, the modem doesn't respond. in KDE's Internet Dialer you have a winmodem and support for non-Lucent/Agere chipsets is a little shaky yet. Good Luck and keep trying though, once you get it to work you won't know the difference.

I FORGOT:
If you get the rpm that matches up to your distro/kernel all you have to do is this:
Get into a console
cd /directory where drivers are
rpm -i ltmodem-kv*

Then an installation program will run it's course, telling you if the module matches up with the kernel, and if it does, you're good to go. The modem should be under /dev/modem (that's a symbolic link to something like /dev/ttyLT0). If you get an error when you try to use it the first time, you might need to simply restart the Xserver or Reboot.
