Modem and soundcard probs-MD10

I was once laughed at for starting out with Slackware,so now I have
Mandrake 10 and I still have the same problems. My sound card and modem don't work...

Modem is a PCTel HSP56K (I know I need the chipset, but this is where I start)linmodem. The internet connection and all seems to be setup but the modem wont dial out. It says it is initilizing the modem it stops there.

The soundcard is a SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer. All Bar graphs and audio programs show it to be working but there is no sound coming from the speakers. Everything has been checked and nothing is muted or turned off.

If you haven't guessed, I'm new to this Linux game and trying to get away from Micro$loft all together. So any and all help would be appreciated.
