It probably is a winmodem. Most of the big name manufacturers like Dell, Gateway, and Compaq (HP) use winmodems instead of real modems because they are cheaper. Have you tried this site: www.linmodems.org? They have a lot of information on winmodems and links to drivers that will run your winmodem in linux. Enjoy.
