Modem

Hi Guys!!!
i am new to linux and i am having problem connecting to internet.
You see i have this conexant modem who driver i think is already been recognized by linux. when i use the command "lspci" while i am logged in as root it shows me the name of my modem along with other devices. Now as i have migraged from win XP i am more like comfortable with using the GNOME environment. i configured my modem using network configuration and set it to "ttyS0" . But when i use to activate the device my mouse use to hang up and i had to terminate the session. i used "minicom -s" command and realized that it is the port ttyS1 which is (might be i dont know) connected with my modem device. therefore i configured my mdem" to ttys1" using network configurationg in GNOME. Now the problem was when i use to activate it it did activate the device but i never found any button whtsoever to connect to internet. when i used "wvdial" the last statement was modem not responding. After all this i used kppp setup my modem on ttyS1 and did all the usual stuff. Now when i connect it says "The Modem is busy"

(also i downloaded the patch from linmodems and tried the driver from there too no effect )
plz help

if the modem is configured correctly and the driver is loaded ..etc. then this link may help as well.

You see guys i am using Red Hat linux 9 and i was refering to the guide from internet (thats avaible on red hat site) and there was this recommendation to use the port address when configuring the modem instead of /dev/modem anyways i tried it it was not of much use, it said" Modem is busy"
i am really stressed out.
