Modem [kppp] set-up with Fedora Core 1

Installed Fedora Core 1 this afternoon and having problem with dial-up modem set-up.

Filled out the boxes [anybody else notice that the "wizard" does not work for USA] and tried to connect.

1. Got connect at 44,000 and logging on network, followed by "connection suddenly died" !!
2. Error message said "CHAP authentication failed".
3. Went back to set-up and found there are 5 options for "authentication".

4. I have no idea what these are so I tried each one, and none of them worked.

I could get a "connection" but after "logging" on to network the connection "suddenly died" !!

The only "clue" I got was a message that said error is reported as "^@"

I have no idea what this means -- Could use "lot's of help" !!

Watch the log and see if the error messages help.

It may help to also post your /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts files.

You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
urpmi gcc

Actually the "story" is a little more involved then what I originally posted.

I had Red Hat 8.0 and a "back-up" copy of Win98SE as a dual-boot on my No. 2 HD. I have a Trios HD switcher with 3 hard drives. [No. 1 is "primary" Win98SE and No. 3 is Mandrake 9.0]

When I attempted to replace RH 8.0 with Fedora, it "got away from me" and I wiped out Win98SE and the GRUB loader. When I looked over Fedora, I found it to be "much less user-friendly/intuitive" then RH 8.0 [the modem was working with RH]

So today, I formatted/fdisked and reinstalled Win98SE and RH 8.0. I am far from "mastering RH 8.0" the RH CDs came with the manual "Linux for Dummies" so I will continue to work on RH 8.0.

Meanwhile, I am unable to post /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/hosts since Fedora is no longer installed. But "Thanks Again" for you interest and help.

I liked Red Hat 7.3 but I couldn't stand 8.0 or 9.0. I do like FC1, but I find it less "Linux friendly" than 7.3 as I can't figure out my easy one command or one click thingies I made work in FC1. I think I have quite a bit more speed than with the previous versions, but they are using more automatic scripts so that when I look at a config file, it is full of some kind of script instead of the straight forward text I got used to using to configure.

Actually, when I get everything tweaked and working in Gentoo on this box, I think Red Had or Fedora will fall by the wayside. I might try Knoppix (Debian based) there. I will always have fond memories of it as my first learning distro, though, even though they seem to be following one leader I don't like very much (high priced, buggy, software, most popular OS) in their "automation" of installation, automatic configurations with probes etc. At least it asks and I know that I didn't remove my mouse and I can tell it so.

I like Gentoo because you have complete control over what gets installed, the initialization is much easier to understand than other system I have played with. All the config files can be hand edited.

I just built a fileserver with Gentoo and all the trouble I have had is getting framebuffer working properly (I don't want to run X on it but I like to see a full webpage if I use elinks.

I do have X installed on the fileserver and a ton of window manager and desktop environments to play with to see if there is anything I like better than fluxbox and I find myself playing on it more than this box lately. I just wish I could get framebuffer going, though.
