mobile internet compatible wit linux?

I have recently purchased a mobile stick from Rogers however to date I cannot use it on my lap top because of linux.

Can anyone help?
Does anyone know if it is possible to use the mobile internet stick with linux or is it only compatible with windows & mac.

I have tried everything - using the dvd that came with the stick but NOTHING!!!!!

Can you be a bit more specific? Brand, model number?

Though carriers hardly provide support for linux, still you can run it on linux using wvdial. Is the network CDMA or GSM?
After inserting the stick in usb port, as root enter command
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
And tell the results. If wvdialconf package isn't there, you will have to install it.

I tried to run the dvd to try and get some help from it however when I try to run the execute/load it I get an "error of phoenix" message.
Are you familiar with this at all or know how I could use this mobile stick or am I just simply not able to use a mobile stick with linux?

have you checked the linux hardware compatibility list (LHCL) ?

what do you mean by nothing? no contend on the cd? what have you done after you inserted the cd?

Hi there! I just registered (although I've lurked here often) following a search result about using a Rogers usb stick...

If you don't mind I'll pick up where LisaLiska left off.

I am helping out an older gentleman who totaled his Win machine (a brand new Acer Aspire 5920 laptop). After some tinkering I decided to stop wasting my time and just wipe it to install Gloria 7. Perfect, beautiful, wifi working. But at the home he lives at they do not provide wifi so he bought a Rogers stick, which I know nothing about.

On the sticker in the back it says Model MF636, HSUPA USB modem and from what I can gather, it looks like ZTE is the manufacturer.

When I plug it in, it is not even detected, either as a flash drive or a modem. After reading a bit I install wvdialconf and after the scan here is what it says:

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?
etc.

I then installed setserial and ran it. The list of commands came up and...

And thats where I'm at. Somehow I doubt this is what I need. But I don't know enough about Linux to really understand what I'd be getting into and some instructions or suggestions would really be appreciated.

first findout it's detected properly using lsusb -v command

Hi, i think it will use the option module.

Also check if binfmt is installed, that will look after the serial conversion.

j_jerry, I ran lsusb -v and it did mention some USB ports. But there are 4 of them on this laptop and even though I adjusted the number of lines to show in the terminal window, I can't tell if it detects the stick per se. But I don't believe so, looking at the data, it looks like it lists all usb ports as empty. Makes sense?

GlennsPref: I did some diging around and it appears that I don't have all the modules. I tried the modprobe thing and usbcore is not present along with ehci_hcd and ohci_hcd. I tried through apt but wasnt successful, I'm obviously doing something wrong. How can I get these?

I'll look up binfmt as well.

There is one thing I cannot do though and it's this:

I think that ZTE MF636 3G modem responds by default as an autorun CD drive or as the internal USB hub (19d2:2000) but we need the actual modem which selected after issuing the AT+ZCDRUN=8 (then it responds 19d2:0031 on lsusb terminal command).

You can try the following steps:

1. on WinVista through control panel ADD the extra init command AT+ZCDRUN=8
2. try to connect once with the providers s/w (WinVista)
3. remove the above command through control panel (WinVista)

Because I do not have a dual boot. But this makes a lot of sense. Since in the Network Connections there is a MObile Broadband tab that I can add the stick to and set up with the proper config... I'm still stuck with the 19d2:2000 though so I guess my next hunt is how to change that to 19d2:0031...

I might have fallen off topic here, if so, thank you very much for your help. I will come back tomorrow anyways, but enough for tongiht :)
