on fedora 14 you should NEVER NEED to have to run "startx"
that whole process is handled by GDM
GDM starts up gnome2

the GUI "Plymouth"boot art will load
fallowed BY the GUI login screen
fallowed by the normal user account Desktop
( you can NOT login to the gui as root - that has been DISABLED to protect "the WORLD" )

Also fedora 14 is past it's END OF LIFE
please stay current and install fedora 17
http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-all

you are 3 versions out of date
and have not had ANY security updates since December 2011

then this is a Vm issue and not a linux fedora problem

please reread the instructions on whatever VM ( VMware i am guessing but there are others ) you are using

also fedora 14 is 3 versions OUT OF DATE
there IS NO current software for it
no new NOTHING

the only way on the old 14 you would get a text boot ( by default) is if YOU installed a TEXT ONLY install
or
if you did not set aside enough system resources in this unnamed VM

or did not specify the 3d card in this " VM"

Quote:
when is press 'startx' is goes in gui
??????????????
there is no " pressing " of a typed into the terminal command !

you HAVE to type into the terminal " startx "
but on fedora that will NOT work

that task is covered by the Desktop Manager ( GDM )

BUT if you insist on using a DEAD version of fedora
then you might want to post a question on the End Of Life thread over at fedora forum

"EOL (End Of Life) Versions "
