Missing Operating System - USB ISO Ubuntu
 

I thought I pick the Newbie forum, as it is a "first" attempt to do a fresh install.

On the XP machine I downloaded:
Ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

Sent to 16 Gig USB stick, ( only spare one I had )

The machine I'm going to convert has XP and it was a freebie.
That machines details are:
HP Compaq
Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86GHz
1.97 GB of RAM


The goal is to eventually run Office 2010 using the required stuff, such as WINE and experiment with other options to.

When I tried booting from USB stick,
( boot options were changed to USB)
When Re-Booting, the first error straight off the bat says:
I have not re-formatted, it still has the Win XP OS
when I change back to the original boot sequence.

So how do I install Ubuntu ISO off a USB ?

it seems whatever method you used to put the image on the usb stick did not work. There a couple of ways to do this. See for example:

I kliked on it, then kliked the sub link;

the web page was unavailable,
I tried 2 different browsers.

All I did was download from Ubuntu web site to a folder in Windows C:,
when the download was finished, I simply sent to empty USB stick.
File on HD and USB are exactly the same.

While waiting for a reply, I found LinuxLive (LiLi)
Went through the motions and finally got it working, it booted and gave me the option of XP or Ubuntu.
Chose the latter and went to install Ubuntu.
It did not get very far, got error message that said:
Totally confused, as I know I got the download ISO file from the official web site.

Rebooted and probed around using the USB version.

Now the computer has no way of turning off, I had to unplug it from the mains.
Rebooted and all I get is a black screen and a white dash on the top left corner.
Ctrl Alt Del does nothing.

It seems I have lost control of this test computer, no boot option to XP to start over.

Is there anything else other than Ubuntu to try ?
It was too much hassle all day just to install a different OS and all I got is a crashed PC.

The link I posted is the method suggested on te Ubuntu web site. So perhaps try that?

there is nothing now, it boots only to a black screen and a flashing dash on top left corner.
Ctrl Alt Del is now working, F9 for boot options works, tried all options.
When "Boot from USB" option is selected it's back to "Missing Operating System",
and
F10 for BIOS settings works.

Does not have a A: Floppy drive or I would format with my old Win 3.11 disks and start over.
There is no XP option on boot-up either, at least!

You dont need xp to boot in another OS. If your computer has a CD or DVD tray I would just burn the ISO on to a blank DVD and boot the computer from it. I have had good results with disks instead of flash drives.

Just make sure you burn the ISO as image not as data disk.

Thanks, I have to go get a DVD, the blank CD I tried was a 700, the ISO is 748,544.
It's the reason I rushed it a bit.

So the same 748,544 ISO I downloaded will simply boot the PC without any other requirements ?

Yes. Do an md5checksum after downloading to verify it. Should be instructions on the download page. Burn it as an image at a low speed and set your DVD drive to boot first.

If I understand you correctly, when you downloaded the ISO, you just copied it and pasted it onto the flash drive. Don't worry, it's a common mistake.

A progam that I use is windiskimager. It has worked fine for me. When it prompts you to open a file, you have to set it to look for "All Files" instead of "Image Files." Other than that, everything is straightfoward. Just remember that all data on the flash drive will be PERMENATELY erased.

If you want to burn it to a DVD, you need a program like ImgBurn. Otherwise, you'll get the same "Missing Operating System" message.

I read instructions, but sometimes they are written in a way that's foreign in IT terms, they make sense after a phase of trial and error.
I think with most "migrants" from MS "utopia" it's been, download/klik/install/done, ask questions later.

Anyway,
got the DVDs, looking for a checksum , along the searching's I found InfraRecorder.
What a pest that became on install.
It came bundled with all this other stuff that had to be uninstalled.
AV/FW application went crazy btw, but survived it. CCleaner did the rest and some manual deletions in regedit.

Have not burnt anything yet as I write this reply.

The only problem I see later on is my internet connection.
Telstra 4G USB stick, PrePaid.
I don't think it will work on a non MS Operating System,

So far so good, it's installed,
On the login screen after boot-up it has
Ubuntu
and
Ubuntu 2D
But won't recognize my p/w on either options and I KNOW wrote the p/w down.

So it's logged in as guest.
When probing, I'm still "my name" as Administrator under "Other Accounts"
But on the top right next to the clock it has "Guest".

Other than that, it seems fine, was able to change p/w... and appears I'm still Admin.

I have no idea on how to get to do whatever now needs to be done to get that USB internet stick to work, that's next.
