Misconfigured X! need help

This is my first post. I'll try to make it a good one. i have a nvidia geforce fx5500 graphics card. and i wasnt able to play and high quality games because the black screen would come up then they would just shutdown. well while trying to fix this i was downloading drivers and changing settings in xorg.conf (read a tut) well after it didnt work i downloaded the Xconfig file off nvidia.com and i guess it was the wrong one.. the install file i downloaded and it made a backup of the original xorg.config to xorg.config.backup... so i need to know how to change this back through command prompt. keep in mind i am new and dont know all the terms. also i am running SuSE 10.1.. if anything else is need ask. Thanks in advance

You can use mv (move) or cp (copy) to restore the backup, e.g. "mv xorg.conf.backup xorg.conf" from within /etc/X11.

if i dont get this to work is there any other way that i could find the xorg.conf file somewhere else and just replace it?.... what i have tried doing is moving xorg.config into /root from /etc/X11 and that worked but the X server is still using it... i tried renaming xorg.config.backup to xorg.config and it wont work..

It should be xorg.conf, for a start. If that configuration worked before, it should work again. Post whatever error messages you're getting.

ok I am gonna try... i think i jacked the .backup, up though... i was trying to rename it and to just xorg.config hoping that it would recognize it and use it... i think it is now named xorg.conf~ and i cant change it to anything now. so there is a xorg.conf and a xorg.conf~ in /etc/X11

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Is xorg.conf~ the working backup? If so, you can restore it in the same way as described in my earlier post.

If not, try editing your xorg.conf and commenting out the line "Load "glx"" (i.e. put a hash (#) at the beginning of that line and in the line "Driver "nvidia", change "nvidia" either to "nv" or "vesa".

Hopefully that will give you a working X server.
