I have a wireless/wire linksys router with 3 linux (of various flavors) clients (A,B,C all are currently connected via above Linksys to Internet) and I want to share files between them on a LINUX only LAN. I got the 'share' package and 'shared' a ext4 HD (on A) on network but when I try to access that directory from a different client (B) I get error stating I cannot mount the HD (something like that) The shared HD is mounted (on A). So I am at a loss what next. Anyone have any suggestions?

2. Which service are you using for file sharing?
3. What is the exact error message that you get?
4. Firewall status on all 3 machines.

2) I'm not using UBUNTU ONE. At terminal I type: >shares-admin and a 'Shared Folders' window pops up. I am using sharing.


3) On Client B I get error message: 'Unable to mount location', 'Failed to mount Windows(?) share'

4) Presently I have no firewall set up on any machine.


I hope this sheds some light on the issue I'm dealing with.

Two diagnostic questions:

Are you using Samba or NFS to share the directories? If Samba, is the samba server running (smbd) on the computers to which you are trying to connect (ps -A | grep smbd will tell you whether it is running)?

Are the directories configured in the directory properties as shared directories?

As you said that you will share the stuff between linux system only I would suggest using nfs. Here is the link to configure NFS: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo

As Linux Mint is also a derivative of Debian the above document should stand for all three. If you stuck somewhere let us know.

I concluded "I'm not even in the ball park,yet". I need to read up on networks; especially NFS & SAMBA services. I'll probably follow that progression in building up this LAN. That's the plan. Thanks for pointing me in right direction. I'll keep you posted on lack of progress.

The reference that finally got me over the hump to getting my home network running (mixed Windows and Linux) was Samba by Example.

It starts with sample configuration and configuration files for simple networks and moves to progressive more complex ones. I found what I needed by page 20. I still have a copy on my bookshelf.
